San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - After a 5-1 road trip, the San Angelo Colts returned to Foster Field poised to begin a nine-game homestand on Sunday, but they had all their momentum taken away in one big inning by the Laredo Broncos. The Broncos (13-11) scored eight runs on seven hits in the second inning, and went on to defeat the Colts (13-12) in the series opener of a three-game set, 12-4. With the victory, Laredo moved into second place, a half-game ahead of San Angelo.
Right-hander Ryan Mulle (1-2), making a spot start for Caleb Rodgers who was placed on the Inactive List today, gave up two singles and walked a batter with one out to load the bases in the second. Dwayne White started the scoring with an RBI single and Eric Padilla made it 2-0 with another RBI single. After a sacrifice fly by Luany Sanchez to make it 3-0, Edgard Clemente reached on an infield single to reload the bases. Santiago Guerrero then crushed a grand slam to deep left field, breaking the game open and giving Laredo a 7-0 advantage. Arnoldo Ponce, who started the inning with a single, went back-to-back with Guerrero, hitting his first homer of the year, a solo shot to left to make it 8-0.
Mulle made it through the second but was pulled for the third in favor of right-hander Billy McKinney, who made his Colts debut after being acquired today from the Gateway Grizzlies. McKinney had a solid outing and only ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing three runs, two of them coming on a homer by Ivan Reyes, which made it 11-3 at the time. McKinney lasted four innings, surrendering those three runs on six hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Broncos starter Andy Schon improved to 3-1 on the year with the win. The righty hurled seven innings, giving up four runs, all earned, on seven hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. The Colts touched him up for three runs in the second, coming the closest they did all night, making it 8-3. Benny Craig blasted a one-out, solo home run off the scoreboard in right field, his fifth of the year. Jose Torres singled, Aaron Cone doubled, and they both scored on a two-out single by Charley Belew. Torres also hit his third homer of the season, a solo shot to left, in the fourth to make it 11-4 at that point. Laredo added a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Josh Morrison to make it the final of 12-4.
