Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Laredo, TX - The Harlingen WhiteWings (2-2) took an early 8-1 lead and held onto beat the Laredo Broncos (1-3) 8-7 tonight at Veterans Field.

The WhiteWings jumped on top of Jose Cordero (0-1) right away as Bub Bergstrom walked and Terry Roblez doubled to right. The throw went into the Broncs dugout, allowing Bergstrom to score and Roblez to move to third. Miguel Peguero followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

In the second, Kevin Griffin led off with a single and Argelis Nunez was hit by a pitch. One batter later, Bergstrom walked. Roblez was hit to force in a run and Peguero followed with an RBI-single to make it 4-0.

With one out in the third, David Fowler walked and Griffin singled. Nunez followed with a two-run single. Candelario Perez was then hit by a pitch, ending Cordero's night. Benny Cepeda came in, and after one batter, allowing an RBI-single to Roblez to cap the inning at 7-0 WhiteWings.

After the long wait in the dugout, Dan Valentin (1-0) was not as sharp in the third, giving up a single to Ivan Reyes, a double to Arnoldo Ponce and walking Anthony Bennett to load the bases with no outs. Dwayne White grounded into a double-play to score Reyes, making it 7-1.

In the fifth, Griffin led off with a double and scored one out later on a Perez RBI-double to make it 8-1.

The Broncos responded in a big way in the bottom of the fifth as Anthony Bennett, Matt Lawman (two-run shot) and former-WhiteWing Luany Sanchez all hit home runs to make it 8-5.

Alex Gett came in for the sixth and gave up a single to Santiago Guerrero followed by a two-run shot to Reyes that made it 8-7. He held the Broncos down for the rest of his two innings, though, to pick up a hold.

Caleb Balbuena struck out the side in a perfect eighth and Derek Bennett finished up to pick up his first save.

Julian Williams made his first-career appearance against the WhiteWings after getting traded to Laredo at the end of spring training. The former-WhiteWing pitched two and a third scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.

The WhiteWings will be back in action tomorrow night at Laredo at 7:35 p.m. The WhiteWings will send right-hander Kenny Evoniuk to the mound against Broncos right-hander Andy Schon.
