Laredo Broncos News Release

LAREDO, TX-The Laredo Broncos lost a heartbreaker 8-7 at Veterans Field on Friday night. The Broncos play the middle game of a 3 game series against the Harlingen White Wings on Saturday night. For more info call (956)-722-BASE (2273).

Harlingen struck early against Broncos starter Jose Cordero. After a lead off walk the White Wings Terry Roblez doubled and on a throwing error by rightfielder Santiago Guerrero on the relay allowed the leadoff man to score. Then a sacrifice fly by Miguel Peguero made the score 2-0 after the top of the first.

That would just be the start of the trouble for Cordero as he gave up 2 more runs in the 2nd inning. A leadoff single, hit by pitch, and a walk loaded the bases when Roblez was hit by a pitch to knock in a run. Then Peguero knocked in another run with an rbi single to give them a 4 run lead.

Cordero would run into trouble in the 3rd inning as well after one out a walk and a single put runners on the corner when Argelis Perez hit an rbi single and then after a hit by pitch Cordero would be taken out for reliever Benny Cepeda. Cepeda stuck out the first man he faced but gave up an rbi single to Roblez to give the White Wings a 7-0 lead.

The Broncos would finally crack the scoreboard in their half of the third inning. Ivan Reyes led off with a single followed by a double by Arnoldo Ponce. Anthony Bennett then walked to load the bases with no one out. Dwayne White would ground into a double play that brought in Reyes. But that would be all the runs they could muster as Laredo still trailed by 6 runs.

Cepeda would run into some trouble in the 5th inning. After a leadoff double by Kevin Griffin, Candelario Perez hit an rbi double to get that run back and make the score 8-1.

The Broncos bats finally came to life in the bottom of the 5th inning as they began to play home run derby against White Wings starter Dan Valentine. With one out Anthony Bennett hit a solo shot. Then after a Dwayne White single Matt Lawman hit a 2 run homer his first of the year to cut the lead to 8-4. Luany Sanchez would join in on the homer frenzy as he went back to back with Lawman and after 5 innings Laredo trailed by 3.

That would do it for Valentine as he gave way to reliever Alex Gett. Gett was greeted rudely by the Broncos as Santiago Guerrero led of the 6th inning with a single and then scored on Ivan Reyes' 2 run home run and after six innings the score was Harlingen 8 and Laredo 7.

The Broncos would threaten to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. Matt Lawman reached base on a walk and Luany Sanchez singled to put runners at 1st and 2nd. However Edgard Clemente struck out and then Jose Salas grounded out giving Harlingen the 8 to 7 victory.

Laredo looks to rebound tomorrow night at 7:30 as they play game 2 of their 3 game set against the Harlingen White Wings at Veteran's Field. First 200 fans to the ball park will receive Bam Bams brought to you by El Metro.
