San Angelo Colts News Release
ALEXANDRIA, La. - It was a wild see-saw affair, and the San Angelo Colts mounted a serious threat in the ninth inning, but in the end they just came up a run short, losing to the Alexandria Aces 9-8 at Bringhurst Field Friday night.
Third baseman Jason Crosland atoned in part for his three errors in the game by ripping a three-run home run, his first hit of the season, to bring the Colts (1-3) to within a run with nobody out in the ninth inning. But Benny Craig flied out to deep right center, and Juan Carlos Ovalles struck out Andres Rodriguez and Jose Torres on six pitches to end the game and earn his first save of the season.
The Colts took the lead first for the second straight day, as center fielder Tyrone Pendergrass homered to right center off Aces starter Chad Linder in the third inning. But Crosland's first error prolonged the bottom half for first baseman Patrick O'Sullivan, who homered to deep left off San Angelo starter Logan Williamson to give the Aces (3-1) a three-run lead.
After Alexandria scored another run in the fourth, the Colts began their comeback. Jose Torres reached on an error and scored on a Pendergrass single, as the San Angelo center fielder had two RBIs against his former mates. In the sixth, the Colts got to 4-3 after Bryan Frichter doubled and scored on an a double by Rodriguez.
San Angelo retook the lead in the seventh, scoring two off reliever Ryan Rockholt. With two outs and two men aboard, Charlie Foster (1-0) came in and allowed a wild pitch to tie the game, and Frichter's fourth hit made it 6-5 Colts.
But Alexandria came right back against reliever Ryan Mulle (0-1), who allowed two runs in two and two-thirds innings. After he allowed a pair of singles, Mulle was relieved by lefty Brandon Kling, who hit a batter to load the bases and then gave up a two-run single with two outs to Jose Umbria. Kling allowed three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, as Alexandria got back-to-back homers from Brian Sabatella and O'Sullivan to make it 9-5.
The Colts did not go quietly, as John Anderson singled to lead off the ninth against Ovalles, who had put out a San Angelo rally in the eighth. Frichter followed with his fifth hit and third double of the game, the first Colts player to go 5-for-5 this season, before Crosland's home run got the Colts to within a run.
But Doc Edwards' team's rally died there, and San Angelo will have to wait until tomorrow to try to pick up win number two on the young season.
The Colts continue their three-game series in Alexandria, La., with a 7:05 p.m. start on Saturday, May 17.
