WhiteWings Go Deep Five Times, Take Season Opener in Edinburg

EDINBURG - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings hit five home runs for the first time in recent history to beat the Edinburg Roadrunners 13-10 on Wednesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

It is the fifth year in a row that the WhiteWings (1-0) have won their season opener.

Antonio DeJesus hit a solo home run and Wesley Dimitt hit a two-run shot as the WhiteWings jumped on Ryan Harris (0-1) in the opening inning.

The Roadrunners (0-1) scored four runs over the next two innings to take the lead, but home runs by Leivi Ventura and Leo Delgado hit home runs to power a five run inning that gave the WhiteWings the lead for good at 8-4.

Delgado added a two-run home run in the fifth to complete a 2-for-4, 5 RBI, night.

Former-Roadrunner Eric Gonzalez also had a strong night, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored.

Elvis Hernandez (1-0) struck out four in two innings of relief for the win.

Edgar Martinez recorded the final out for his first save.

The WhiteWings and Roadrunners play game two of this four-games series on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Right-hander Andy Wells (0-0, 0.00) is expected to face right-hander Corey Goudeau (0-0, 0.00).
