Unearned Runs Sink Snakes

Giving up four unearned runs the Calgary Vipers were defeated 5-2 by the Yuma Scorpions in the back half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games. Making three errors the Vipers gave up all five runs in the first two innings and could not recover as they managed only four hits during the game. Garret Holleran (0-1) took the tough loss after going five and giving up one earned run while not walking a batter and striking out six. Meanwhile Rob Naegele threw a three-up, three-down inning out of the bullpen.

Yuma opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Ray Stokes reached on an error and scored for a 1-0 lead when Luis Ugueto also reached on an error.

The Scorpions added to the lead in the second frame as J.J. Muse singled, Zach Larson tripled for a run batted in, Jesse Alfonso reached on an error which scored Larson, Alfonso scored on a wild pitch, with two outs Ugueto tripled, and Gabriel Ortiz singled home a fourth run for a 5-0 advantage.

Calgary got a run back in the fifth inning for a 5-1 game as Bryan Burke doubled, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Wilver Perez RBI groundout.

Another run was scored by the Vipers in the seventh frame when Louie Templeton walked, Perez singled, Jimmy Rohan singled to load the bases, and Drew Miller walked for a RBI and 5-2 final.

The Vipers return to Calgary and Foothills Stadium for their home opener on Thursday May 26th at 6:30 PM MDT against their Alberta rivals, the Edmonton Capitals.
