Whitewings Fall To Edinburg 7-1 To Close Series

EDINBURG - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (31-25) fell to the Edinburg Roadrunners 7-1 on Saturday night as the two rivals split their four-game series. Edinburg was held scoreless in all but two innings but a five-run third inning propelled the Roadrunners to victory.

The WhiteWings took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a RBI single by Gabriel Ortiz as part of a 3-for-4 night from the ‘Wings catcher.

The Roadrunners responded in the third inning as RJ Harris started the rally with a two-RBI single to give Edinburg a 2-1 advantage.

Osiel Flores hit a bases loaded double which cleared the bases and gave the Roadrunners a 5-1 lead.

Roadrunners starter Jorge Quintero shut down the WhiteWings the entire night facing only 18 batters in the last five innings he pitched. Quintero finished the evening allowing only one run on nine hits with one strikeout.

The Roadrunners added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning as C.J. Beatty and Gabe Memmert both came across to score. Chase Davenport was charged with the runs and for the night went 6.2 innings allowing 11 hits and seven runs, five of them earned. Davenport struck out five and did not walk a batter.

The ‘Wings would attempt to rally in the ninth in but the Roadrunners brought closer Julio Castro who was able to hold on for the Edinburg victory.

The WhiteWings do not return to Edinburg Baseball Stadium this season, going 8-7 including games against the McAllen Thunder

The WhiteWings are off until Tuesday when they host the McAllen Thunder in a doubleheader starting at 6:05 p.m.
