Lake County Fielders News Release
Tuscon, AZ - July 21, 2001- The Fielders headed into Tucson's Hi Corbett Field on Thursday to take on the Yuma Scorpions (playing as the Toros) in a double header. The Fielders (27-22) came out on top of both contests to break their five game losing streak.
Much like the previous evening's game in Yuma, the bulk of the scoring in game one came in the second inning, only this time the tables were turned as the Fielders put on a dominating show. A walk to catcher Alan Rick started the rally as he was quickly brought in on a double off the bat of Mark Samuelson. A sacrifice fly by Colin Moro to score Samuelson gave the Fielders a 2-0 lead. A walk to David Coleman was followed by a single by Brad Augustin and a double by John Dziomba continued the scoring frenzy. By the time the inning was all said and done, the Fielders batted around their line-up and led 6-0.
Thanks to a stellar pitching performance by Jeremy Brewer, who allowed just one unearned run to the Scorpions in the bottom of the second inning the Fielders were able to hold on for the 6-1 victory. Brewer ended the game surrendering just three hits in his complete game performance.
Heading into game two the Fielders bats stayed hot as both Maikel Jova and Samuelson led off the game with RBI doubles to put Lake County up 2-0. In the bottom half of the inning the Scorpions fired back thanks to a moon shot by Jose Canseco that tied the game at 2-2.
The Fielders would scrape together two more runs, one coming in the second after an error by the third baseman and the second coming when Brad Augustine hit into a double-play with the bases loaded, allowing David Coleman to score from third. The Scorpions had a chance in the bottom of the seventh off pitcher Nick Kennedy when Jesse Alfonso reached on a Fielders error which led to runners on second and third. Kennedy was able to battle back and end the threat without allowing any runs to secure the 4-3 win.
The Fielders look to make it three in a row as they head back to Yuma to take on the Scorpions in the final game of the series. You can listen live on 1220 WKRS or www.fieldersbaseball.com beginning at 6:30pm local time (8:30pm CT).
