WhiteWings fall big to Broncos

Harlingen, TX - The Laredo Broncos (17-15) sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth to score six runs en route to a 13-6 victory over the Harlingen WhiteWings (13-20) tonight at Harlingen Field.

Derek Bennett came into get the final out of the fifth and retired the first seven hitters he faced. In the eighth, though, Reyes led off with a walk and Ben Tinius singled. Matt Lawman placed a perfect bunt down the third base line for a base hit. Griffin fielded the ball and fired it into right field, allowing Reyes and Tinius to score. Nunez's throw to third to try to get Lawman got away, allowing him to score. Anthony Bennett then singled to knock out Derek Bennett. Brandon Kling came in and allowed singles to Wright and Ponce to load the bases. Dwayne White hit a two-ruin single. Sanchez followed with a double play that score Ponce to make it 13-6 Broncos.

Steven Wright started off the game with a walk against Angel Cordero (1-1). Arnoldo Ponce followed with his third home run of the season to make it 2-0 Broncos.

The WhiteWings sent eight men to the plate in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead against Gregorio Martinez (3-0). Bub Bergstrom and Kevin Griffin led off with walks. One batter later, Ryan Fox was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Argelis Nunez then hit into an RBI-fielder's choice. David Fower followed with an RBI-double and Terry Roblez hit an RBI-single to cap off the inning.

The WhiteWings loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, allowing Griffin and Brian Nichols to draw back-to-back RBI-walks to give the WhiteWings a 6-2 lead.

Cordero cruised along after giving up those first two runs, striking out seven and allowing just two hits. In the fifth, though, Anthony Bennett led off with a four-pitch walk, Wright singled, and Ponce hit a two-run double. One out later, Luany Sanchez hit an RBI-single. One out after that, Ivan Reyes walked and Ben Tinius hit a two-run triple to knock out Cordero with the Broncos up 7-6.

The WhiteWings welcome the Alexandria Aces into town tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Kenny Evoniuk (0-4) will face left-hander Jeremy Cameron (0-0).
