San Angelo Colts News Release

SAN ANGELO, Texas - A night after scoring 21 runs, including nine in one inning, the Colts' offense continued to be white-hot, scoring 11 runs In a 16-batter second inning to erase a 3-0 deficit and take two of three from Edinburg, winning by a final of 17-7.

A crowd of 1,668 saw the offensive onslaught, as the Colts (18-15) matched a season high with 22 hits to clinch a winning homestand at 5-4 and maintain their position in second place in the United League standings.

After a three-run homer from Angelo Fermin gave the Coyotes (12-20) an early lead, the Colts went right to work. The first nine batters of the inning all reached and scored off John Maschino (0-3), who was chased after he retired only four batters. Some of the offensive highlights included the third home run and first grand slam of the season for Bryan Frichter and two RBI singles by Wyn Diggs in the inning. Charley Belew hit an RBI double in the inning and scored twice in the frame, and Frichter drove in his fifth run of the inning with his league-leading 22nd double in his second at-bat of the inning.

The Colts got two more runs in the sixth and four in the seventh, batting around twice overall, and ambushing Coyotes relievers Bric Steed (4.1 innings, nine hits, four runs) and Adam Clay (1.1 innings, 6 hits, 4 runs), before Julio Castro pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to restore order.

Brian Henschel (2-2) was the beneficiary of all the offense, as he went 6.2 innings while striking out nine Coyotes hitters to get his second straight win. Alex Merricks relieved Henschel and pitched an inning and a third of scoreless ball before Miliade Venas tossed a 1-2-3 ninth, his sixth shutout inning in seven appearances with the Colts.

Jose Torres had four singles and a double in six at-bats, while Andres Rodriguez was 4-for-6, and John Anderson and Diggs each had three RBIs.

Notes: Frichter had a single, double and home run, missing a triple for the cycle...Tyrone Pendergrass and Rodriguez each extended their streaks of reaching base to 30 consecutive games. They came into play today tied with Danny Bravo of Amarillo and Ryan Fox of Harlingen for the longest ULB streak. Torres is right behind them at 27...Every hitter in the game had at least a hit...The Colts were also very patient, drawing eight walks in eight innings.

The Colts will go on a quick road trip to Laredo Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday before returning home for a brief homestand against Harlingen. On Friday, June 20, there will be a Glow-in-the-dark baseball giveaway, sponsored by AEP and Suddenlink. Saturday June 21 is Cap Day, sponsored by Verizon and Fox, and Sunday is KSJT Night.
