WhiteWings Fail to Support Cruz Again

Harlingen - For the sixth time this season, the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings lost a game started by Reymond Cruz (4-4) in part due to a lack of run support, in a 5-1 loss to the Amarillo Dillas tonight at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings have scored 10 runs for Cruz in those six losses, an average of 1.7 per game. The WhiteWings have won five of Cruz's starts, scoring 45 runs, an average of 9.0 per game, in those contests.

The Dillas (28-23) scored first for the third-straight game. Stantrel Smith led off the second with a single and stole second against Cruz. With one out, Eric Brown laid down a sacrifice bunt, setting up a run- scoring wild pitch to make it 1-0.

Keanon Simon led off the third with a double, stole third and scored on a one-out groundout by Carlos Figueroa to make it 2-0.

In a spot start, Jesse Rodriguez (2-1) worked quickly and efficiently, keeping the WhiteWings (23-28) off the board for the first five innings. Brian Nichols led off the sixth with a double to knock out Rodriguez. Robbie Wooley came in and walked Welinson Baez on four pitches. Alberto Cruz laid down a sacrifice bunt and Juan Cabrera came up with an RBI-groundout to make it 2-1.

The Dillas extended their lead in the seventh, With one out, Eric Brown singled, stole second and third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Wenger to make it 3-1.

In the eighth, Simon led off with a bunt-single, hustled to third on a groundout by Andrew Wong and scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.

Stantrel Smith gave the Dillas a 5-1 lead with his third home run of the season in the ninth against Juan Diaz.

The WhiteWings and Dillas play game three of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Harlingen Field. Left-hander Jesus Sanchez (3-1) is expected to face right-hander Taylor Allen (3-4).
