Colts Move Ahead in Series, Sweep Doubleheader

San Angelo, Texas--- The San Angelo Colts (36-15) collected their first doubleheader sweep of the season taking two from the Edinburg Roadrunners (24-27) on Sunday evening.

In continuing from the postponed contest on Saturday, game two of the four game series resumed in the bottom of the fourth inning as San Angelo trailed by a run. With Nick Mahin on second, Mahin fell victim to the pickoff. Through four innings of play, Edinburg held a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Butch Ballez reached on a single. The Colts shortstop moved to third base after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Ballez stood at third when Jason Diaz hit a high bouncer back to the pitcher. Diaz beat the throw at first base as Ballez stepped on home plate to tie the game at one.

Edinburg regained the lead in the top half of the eighth inning. With Roadrunners at second and third base, and one out, Vincent Blue grounded to second base scoring Carlos Hereaud. It was 2-1 in favor of Edinburg.

In the bottom of the frame, though, the Colts charged. The inning began with a walk to Jason Landreth and a double to right field by Josh Collazo. Runners were set up at second and third base when Nick Mahin delivered. It was a line drive single off the bat of the Colts right fielder that scored Landreth and Collazo, San Angelo took their first lead of the game, 3-2.

In the top of the ninth inning, Colts closer Chace Vacek entered. With one out, Edinburg had runners at first and second base and Carlos Hereaud in the batters box. Hereaud lined out to Jason Diaz at second base, Wilmer Pino stranded too far off second base as the Colts converted a double play to end the ballgame..

The winner was Brett Lester (4-2). He allowed a run in an inning of relief. Edinburg's, Bryan Heaston (0-4), suffered the defeat while Chace Vacek earned his tenth save of the 2009 season.

The final game of the doubleheader began just before 6:30, it would be a seven inning ballgame . The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the second inning. The frame began with a broken bat single by Jason Landreth. Josh Collazo was hit by a pitch and Nick Mahin followed with a single to place Colts at all bases. A groundout to first base off the bat of Hunter Jobes scored Landreth, San Angelo took the first lead of the ballgame. A miscue by the Edinburg defense and a Ronnie Gaines single scored another two Colts, it was a 3-0 game.

In the third frame, San Angelo's offense struck again. Mahin singled in a run, Butch Ballez doubled off the wall which plated another run. At the end of three, the Colts led 5-0.

Colts starter Brian Henschel did not surrender a hit until the fourth inning. Henschel sat down 11 straight Roadrunners until a Carlos Hereaud single.

After a leadoff single, a balk, and a wild pitch, Bryan Frichter stood at third base in the fifth inning. A two out bloop single from Hunter Jobes scored Frichter giving San Angelo a 6-0 lead.

That would be all the offense San Angelo would need. Brian Henschel (7-3) rolled to his fourth straight complete game, third consecutive shutout. The Colts ace only allowed two hits in seven innings of work without giving up a run. In Henschel's last 32 innings of work, he has only allowed a single run. Aaron Guerra (1-4) accepted the loss. San Angelo completed the doubleheader sweep moving ahead two games to one in the four game series.

San Angelo and Edinburg will continue their four game series tomorrow at Foster Field. It will be haircuts at the ballpark sponsored by Sport Clips. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
