Amarillo Dillas News Release

HARLINGEN, TX - The Amarillo Dillas didn't have much offense, but they made every base runner count as they controlled the pace of a 5-1 victory over the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings on Sunday night at Harlingen field.

Dillas starter Jesse Rodriguez (2-1) went five innings and gave up the lone Whitewings run in his third start of the season. Whitewings starter Reymond Cruz (4-4) got the loss, going an out short of eight innings, only gave up five hits but four runs. Amarillo's Coby Mavroulis got his first save of the season, pitching the final three innings of perfect scoreless relief. Stantrel Smith scored two runs and hit his third homerun in the effort.

The Dillas took an early lead in the second inning as Smith singled, stole second, went to third on an Eric Brown sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. Keanon Simon doubled to lead off the third, stole third and scored on a Carlos Figueroa groundout for a 2-0 lead.

Off Rodriguez, the Whitewings couldn't get on the board until the sixth. Brian Nichols led off to start the inning, which brought in reliever Robbie Wooley. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt moved runners in scoring position, Juan Cabrera grounded out but scored Nichols for a 2-1 deficit.

Amarillo would continue to score in the seventh as Brown singled, stole second and third, and scored on a Justin Wenger sacrifice fly. Another run would score in the eighth as Simon led off with a bunt single, went to third on a hit-and-run groundout by Andrew Wong and scored on another wild pitch to take a 4-1 lead and knock out Cruz for the night.

In the ninth, Smith led off with a solo homerun for a 5-1 lead. Mavroulis pitched a perfect seventh, eighth and ninth to preserve the victory.

With the win, the Dillas improve to 28-23, while the Whitewings fall to 23-28. Monday, Amarillo will go for the road sweep against the Whitewings in Harlingen for the final game of a four-game series at 7:05pm. The game can be heard on AudioSportsOnline.net.
