WhiteWings Earn Doubleheader Split with Coastal Bend

Robstown - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings jumped in front of the Coastal Bend Thunder with two runs in each of the first two innings and another run in the third en route to 8-3 win in seven innings in game two of a doubleheader on Monday at Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds Field.

The WhiteWings (6-6) got on the board right away against J.J. Trujillo (0-2). Javis Diaz led off with a single and Kevin Griffin reached on an error. One out later, Joel Roa hit an RBI-double. One batter after that, Eric Gonzalez hit an RBI-groundout to make it 2-0.

The WhiteWings loaded the bases with two outs in the second and scored a pair of runs after bases loaded walks by Arlon Quiroz and Gonzalez that made it 4-0.

Brad Menadier led off the bottom of the third with a single and later came around to score on a single by Griffin to make it 5-0.

The Thunder (6-6) got their first run against Luis Montano (2-0) in the bottom of the third. Kevin Butler led off the inning with a single and scored on a two-out single by Leivi Ventura to make it 5-1.

Albert Gonzales hit a two-out RBI-double to drive-in Mike Lewis to make it 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth.

Brian Nichols hit a home run to right field to leadoff the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 5-3 and knock out Montano.

The WhiteWings added three runs in the top of the seventh against Doug Brandt on a two-run home run by Griffin and an RBI-single by Quiroz.

Anderson Garcia pitched the final two innings for his first save.

The WhiteWings and Thunder play game three of this eight-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Harlingen Field. It's Twofer Tuesday, presented by RC Cola, when fans will be able to purchase two tickets, hot dogs, chips and/or sodas for the price of one, in addition to half-price beers. Gates open at 6:05. Right-hander Misael DeJesus (0-0) is expected to face left-hander Frank James Jr. (2-0).
