Whitewings Drop Game One of Doubleheader in Coastal Bend

Robstown - The Coastal Bend Thunder scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 3-2 in seven innings in game one of a doubleheader on Monday at Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds Field.

The loss snaps the WhiteWings' (5-6) three game winning streak.

Alex Fernandez drew a two-out walk from David Cross (1-2) and moved to second on a wild pitch. Pinch-runner Ron Fenwick scored when Lester Contreras hit a ground ball to shortstop that got past Jose Fulgencio.

That made a winter of Toro Trevino (1-1), who allowed two runs (one earned) in six innings while scattering seven hits and one walks to go with four strikeouts.

Cesar Polanco pitched a scoreless top of the seventh for his second save.

Cross allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks in five and two-thirds innings while striking out three.

The Thunder (6-5) got on the board against Cross right away. Dustin Smith led off with a triple and scored when Mike Goss hit a dribbler up the first base line to make it 1-0.

Joel Roa led off the top of the second with a double against Trevino. One out later he scored on a single by Eric Gonzalez to tie the game at 1-1.

The WhiteWings took the lead in the top of the third. Javis Diaz and Kevin Griffin reached with one out. After a wild pitched moved Diaz to third, Salvador Paniagua hit an RBI-infield single to make it 2-1.

Mike Goss tied the game with his first home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.

The WhiteWings and Thunder play game two of this doubleheader at approximately 8:44 p.m. Right-hander Luis Montano (1-0) is expected to face right-hander J.J. Trujillo (0-1).
