HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings completed the four-game sweep of the Coastal Bend Thunder with an 8-4 victory on Sunday at Harlingen Field.
The WhiteWings' (42-42) lead over the San Angelo Colts for the fourth and final playoff spot is now two games and the WhiteWings magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to six.
The WhiteWings welcome former American League MVP, American League Rookie of the Year, six-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger and two-time World Series Champion Jose Canseco and the Laredo Broncos to Harlingen Field on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05. Tickets range from $4-to-$8 and can be purchased online at whitewingsbaseball.com, by calling the WhiteWings at 423-WING (9464) or at the Harlingen Field box office starting at 9:00 a.m.
The WhiteWings got on the board against Luis Martinez (1-2) right away. With one out in the top of the first, Luany Sanchez walked and Yeurys Tejeda hit his 15th home run to make it 2-0.
Eric Gonzalez led off the bottom of the second with a single, moved to second on a single by Roberto Rodriguez, to third when Javis Diaz grounded into a fielder's choice, and scored on a single by Sanchez to make it 3-0.
Welinson Baez and Welington Dotel led off the bottom of the bottom of the fifth with singles. Arlon Quiroz reached on an error, allowing Baez to score. Two outs later, Dotel scored on a wild pitch and Diaz hit an RBI-double to make it 6-0.
The Thunder (28-56) scored three runs (two earned) in the top of the sixth against Jhonny Montoya (1-2), but Leivi Ventura hit his 22nd home run in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-3.
Dustin Smith led off the top of the seventh with a walk and scored on a double by Lammar Guy against Luis Montano to bring the Thunder within three, but Diaz responded with an RBI-double in the bottom of the inning to make it 8-4.
Mickey Cassidy pitched three scoreless innings for his sixth save.
