
WhiteWings Bats Stay Hot in Win

HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings recorded 16 hits for the second-straight game to beat the McAllen Thunder 9-6 on Saturday at Harlingen Field.
The Thunder (17-31) put runners on the corners with one out in the top of the second against Luis Chirinos (3-2) to set-up an RBI groundout by Wilson Batista, making it 1-0.
The WhiteWings (28-21) responded right away against Kurt Houck (2-5). Francisco Santana led off with a double, Antonio DeJesus walked and David Peralta hit a home run off the scoreboard, his 12th of the season, to make it 3-1.
The WhiteWings put runners on the corners to start the second and Jonathan Fernandez hit an RBI-groundout to make it 4-1.
Mike Goss hit a three-run home run in the top of the third, his second of the season, to tie the game.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Eric Eiland was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a double by former-WhiteWing Antoin Gray. Yaibel Tamayo followed with an RBI-single to make it 6-4 Thunder.
Gabriel Ortiz led off the bottom of the inning with a single, stole second, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a groundout by Santana to bring the WhiteWings within 6-5.
Peralta led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, Leivi Ventura doubled and Gerardo Avila hit a two-run single. Two batters later, Ortiz singled to knock out Houck and pinch-hitter Brandon Decker hit a two-run single off of Brian Smith to give the WhiteWings a 9-6 lead.
Edgar Martinez pitched a scoreless ninth for his league-leading 15th save.
The WhiteWings and Thunder play game two of this four-game series on Family Sunday at 7:05 p.m. Look in the Valley Morning Star, Brownsville Herald or The Bargain Book to find a coupon that will allow you to bring up to six people to the game and get dinner for just $25.
