Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The top of the order did almost all of the damage for the Calgary Vipers on Friday night as they edged the Edmonton Capitals 9-6 in front of a big crowd of 3,120 to open the three-game battle of Alberta series at TELUS Field.
Lead-off hitter and centre fielder Jonny Kaplan went 5-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and one RBI, while number two hitter and shortstop Wilver Perez had four RBI including a three-run home run, to lead the Vipers to victory. The provincial rivals are now four games into a 10-game stretch against each other set in both Calgary and Edmonton.
The Caps, meanwhile got most of their offence from the top of the order as well, as lead-off hitter and centre fielder Steve Brown went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored, while second baseman and second batter Matt Rogelstad hit a two-run double. Edmonton also had runs driven in by left fielder Todd Linden and first baseman Brent Metheny, who are now tied for the team lead in RBI with 44 on the season.
Caps starting pitcher Andrew Arreola tossed 5.2 innings, surrendering seven earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts, while David Davidson, Tom Boleska and Bartolome Fortunato also saw action on the mound. The Vipers had a 4-0 lead after the first inning, and the Caps cut the lead to 4-2 and then 7-5, but Calgary was in command all game.
As a result of Friday's decision, coupled with a Lake County Fielders loss, the Caps and Vipers are now tied for first place in the North American League's North Division. Edmonton has a 28-20 record, putting them even with Calgary at 29-21. Lake County is 0.5 games out of first with a 25-18 record.
The Caps and Vipers play 2 p.m. matinee games on Saturday and Sunday to close out the three-game series in Edmonton. Sunday's game is Cheemo Ukrainian Day, as well as Family Pack Sunday presented by Dental Choice and 630 CHED.
There will be Ukrainian entertainment all game, as well as a Ukrainian food combo - perogies, kielbasa and cabbage rolls for just $5. Fans can purchase four tickets, four hot dogs and four Pepsi products for just $52, and there will be a post-game autograph session with the entire Caps team.
