Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The hits just kept on coming for the Calgary Vipers against the Edmonton Capitals on Saturday afternoon at TELUS Field, as they put a whopping 23 on the board en route to an 11-2 victory in the second game of the three-game series.
The Vipers were on fire to start the matinee game, scoring two runs in the first, two more in the second and five more in the third. The teams were tied 2-2 from that point on but the damage was more than done as Calgary cruised to the victory. The Vipers moved into first place in the NAL's North Division with the win, as their 30-21 record puts them one game up on the Caps at 28-21.
There weren't too many Calgary players who didn't have exceptional games at the plate, with right fielder Bryan Burke leading the way with four hits and five RBI, including a grand slam. Third baseman and former Caps player Chad Ehrnsberger went 5-for-6, while shortstop Wilver Perez also had a big game going 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBI.
Only two Caps players were able to record multi-hit games, as lead-off hitter and centre fielder Steve Brown continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 and scoring one of Edmonton's runs. Catcher Nick Valdez also went 2-for-4, while left fielder Todd Linden and first baseman Brent Metheny each drove in a run and continue to lead the Caps with 45 RBI apiece.
It was a tough start on the mound for Caps hurler Rory Shortell, who surrendered nine earned runs on 11 hits through 2.1 innings. Mike Hrynio, Chad Blackwell and David Davidson were able to keep the Vipers' offence to a minimum after that, giving up the two additional runs. Edmonton's pitchers did, however, strike out the Molson Beer Batter - Vipers first baseman C.J. Ziegler - on two occasions, as fans in two sections won coupons for $1 off Molson products.
The Caps and Vipers wrap up the three-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m. with Cheemo Ukrainian Day, as well as Family Pack Sunday presented by Dental Choice and 630 CHED. There will be Ukrainian entertainment all game, as well as a Ukrainian food combo - perogies, kielbasa and cabbage rolls for just $5. Fans can purchase four tickets, four hot dogs and four Pepsi products for just $52, and there will be a post-game autograph session with the entire Caps team.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
