Gathering a season high 23 hits the Calgary Vipers (30-21) defeated the Edmonton Capitals (28-21) 11-2 at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. The Vipers jumped out to an early lead with two runs in both the first and second innings followed by another five tallies in the third frame. At the plate Bryan Burke led the way with five runs batted in on four hits including a grand slam homer. Like Burke, Wilver Perez finished a triple shy of the cycle as he collected four hits as well for three RBI and three runs scored. Chad Ehrnsberger also had a great game in collecting five hits. With the win the Vipers take over sole position of first place in the North Division.

"Our offense obviously came out explosive and when the they put up 11 for you it makes our job as pitchers a lot easier," said pitching coach Bobby Post.

Garret Holleran (4-5) started and was great in going six innings allowing two runs on five hits. Out of the bullpen Scott Watson threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, Rob Naegele punched out three in his scoreless frame, and Dan Morari also tossed a scoreless inning with one strikeout. Rory Shortell (5-3) took the loss after allowing nine runs on 11 hits in two and a third innings.

Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Wilver Perez singled, stole second base, with two outs C.J. Ziegler delivered a clutch run batted in single, Drew Miller collected a base hit, and Chad Ehrnsberger also drove in a run with a base knock for a 2-0 lead.

The Vipers doubled their lead to 4-0 in the second frame as Bryan Burke singled and with two outs Perez launched his seventh home run of the season.

Calgary increased their lead in the third when Miller walked, Ehrnsberger and Justin Tellam singled to load the bases, Bryan Burke smacked a grand slam for his second home run of the season, Jonny Kaplan singled, and Perez doubled in a run for a five run frame and a 9-0 advantage.

Edmonton got a couple runs back in the bottom of the inning for a 9-2 score as Steve Brown singled, Matt Rogelstad doubled, Todd Linden collected a sacrifice fly, and Brent Metheny knocked in a run with a groundout.

The Snakes scored again in the sixth when Miller, Ehrnsberger, and Burke all singed for a run and a 10-2 lead.

Calgary tacked on another run in the ninth frame as Kaplan reached on a fielding error, Rohan and Ziegler singled to load the bases, and Miller walked for a RBI and a 11-2 advantage.

This series in Edmonton to take on the Capitals concludes on Sunday July 17th at 2:05.

The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Monday July 18th at 6:30 for a make-up game against the Edmonton Capitals where it will also be Staples Student School Supply Drive Night.

The Calgary Vipers will be hosting three Women's Pro Fastpitch games between the USAA Pride and the Tennessee Diamonds August 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 6:30 at Foothills Stadium. Tickets are $16 for the Lower Bowl and $12 for the Upper Bowl. Three game packages are also available for $45 and $33. In addition there will be two skill clinics August 2nd and 4th from 10am - 12pm. Cost is $99 for a Clinic and Lunch or $120 for the Clinic, Lunch and two Lower Bowl tickets. There will also be a Lunch Banquet August 3rd including an autograph session with both teams and a lower bowl ticket to the August 3rd game for $49.95 with keynote speaker Cheri Kempf, the Commissioner of the NPF and an ESPN analyst.
