Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen, TX - The first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings signed slugger Luany Sanchez today. He is expected to be in uniform for tonight's game in Laredo at 7:30, though he is not in the starting lineup.

Sanchez comes from the San Diego Padres organization where he was primarily used as a catcher. He also saw limited action at first base and has the ability to play third base and outfield as well. He is expected to see the majority of his playing time in the outfield while batting fifth behind Ryan Fox.

Sanchez's right-handed swing produced a .250 average with six home runs, 36 doubles and 71 RBI in 172 minor league games from Rookie ball to AA.

He was signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Padres on February 12, 2003 and played in the Dominican Summer League where he hit .222 with ten doubles, two home runs and 19 RBI. The 17-year old showed good plate discipline, walking 12 times and striking out 18 times.

He spent 2004 and 2005 in the Arizona League (Rookie Ball). In 2005 he hit .302 with one home run, 15 doubles, one triple, 26 RBI and 27 runs scored in 43 games.

In 2006, the Padres jumped Sanchez to AA Mobile, where he went 2-10 in seven games before getting sent down to Fort Wayne (Midwest League, A-Ball) where he went 4-10 in three games. The Padres then sent him down to short-season A Eugene (Northwest League) where he hit .255 (27-106) in 26 games with two home runs, eight doubles and 16 RBI.

Sanchez turned 22 on June 18th.
