Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Laredo, TX - The first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (36-34, 7-13) fell to the the Laredo Broncos (30-40, 10-11) 10-3 tonight at Veterans Field.
The Broncos struck against Maximino de la Cruz (6-4) right away as Chris Judkins drew a leadoff walk. He stole second and moved to third on a Pedro Lopez. Edwin Maldonado followed with an RBI-ground out to make it 1-0.
The WhiteWings took the lead in the third against Luis Arroyo when John Beal and Kevin Griffin led off with walks. With Bub Bergstrom batting, Griffin took off for second after the ball got away from catcher Ryan Kottke on a missed bunt attempt. Beal didn't go though, so Kottke threw to second and got Griffin in a run down. After the ball got to first baseman Chris Judkins, Beal took off for third. Judkins threw to third, but it went up the right field line, allowing Beal to score and Griffin to go to second. Miguel Peguero later singled Griffin home to make it 2-1.
Pedro Lopez led off the fourth with a perfect bunt single down the third base line and Edwin Maldonado followed with a two-run home run, his ninth of the season, to make it 3-2. The homer was especially impressive since the wind was blowing in at about 30 miles per hour and the ball cleared the wall by about 20 feet.
The WhiteWings tied it up in the top of the sixth as Ryan Fox drew a one-out walk and Brian Nichols followed with an infield single. Back-to-back wild pitches drove in Fox to tie the game 3-3.
The game was paused for 24 minutes after the sixth due to lightning in the area.
Arroyo came out after the delay having allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
Henry Lozado (3-4) took over and threw an inning and two-third of scoreless relief with three strikeouts to get the win.
The Broncos took the lead in the bottom of the seventh as Cameron McGuire pushed a bunt to the left side for a single. Luis Ramos put down a sacrifice bunt to advance McGuire to second. Ryan Kottke hit an RBI triple and scored on a J.M. Devarie suicide squeeze, making it 5-3.
That ended de la Cruz's night, as he allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
The Broncos put the game out of reach with a collection of softly hit bloopers, bleeders, choppers and grounders that found holes from the first five hitters of the inning against Kenny Evoniuk. After a strike out, Kottke hit a two-run single to knock out Evoniuk. Bryce Ahrendt came in and allowed an RBI-ground out to Devarie before escaping the jam.
The WhiteWings and Broncos play game three of this four game set tomorrow night at 7:30. Julian Williams (2-4) is expected to face Juan Jimenez (0-0).
