Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
HARLINGEN- Rio Grande Valley scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning and Luis Noel threw his second straight quality start en route to an 11-2 WhiteWings victory against the San Angelo Colts at Harlingen Field Saturday night.
Noel, who one-hit the McAllen Thunder over 6 1/3 innings last Monday, threw six shutout innings against the Colts (37-38) before running out of gas in the seventh. The Haitian-born righthander struck out six and allowed just four hits, two of which came in the seventh, while walking four batters.
But Noel (7-2) downplayed the idea he had made any significant changes for his recent success.
"I think I'm doing the same thing," the 24-year-old said. "I have been throwing in the bullpen between starts and working on location."
Regardless, he was more than effective enough considering the way the WhiteWings (43-31) attacked San Angelo starter Mark Willinsky. After scoring one run in the first on a Ruddy Yan double and Alex Ruiz two-out triple, the WhiteWings saw eight straight batters reach base on seven hits with two out in the third inning to score six runs and turn the game into an early laugher.
The WhiteWings would score three more times in the fifth off Willinsky (7-5), who gave up 10 runs and 11 hits in a 4 1/3 inning stint.
Robert Moran completed the scoring in the bottom of the eighth by hitting a pinch-hit home run to right field off Russell Johns.
Every player in the WhiteWings' starting lineup collected hits, allowing Leivi Ventura to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and Bryan Marquez's streak to reach 10.
San Angelo, meanwhile, saw Cory Patton's 10-game streak end after the stocky slugger went hitless in three at bats.
The WhiteWings, who have taken seven of eight games against the Colts this year at home, will attempt to sweep San Angelo tonight at 7:05 p.m. when righthander Clint Bowker (1-1) faces Demetrius Banks (3-5) in the lefthander's first start since being acquired in a trade from McAllen earlier this week.
