Thunder Drop Early Lead

EDINBURG, Texas- The Edinburg Roadrunners won their fifth game in a row after they came from behind to defeat the McAllen Thunder 3-1 Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Edinburg (46-29) rallied for two runs against McAllen starter Jeff Sakoski (0-3) that gave them the lead for good.

However, it was McAllen (27-48) who got on the board first. After three straight singles to start the top of the third, Craig Hertler grounded into a double play that allowed Cristobal Santana to score for the 1-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the sixth as the Roadrunners got to Sakowski. Stantrel Smith led off with a single and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Wilmer Pino was hit by a pitch, Smith came in to score on an RBI single by Carlos Hereaud. Derek Perren then followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that allowed Pino to score giving Edinburg the 2-1 lead.

Ryan Smith (4-4) picked up his fourth win of the season after pitching an inning and one-third of relief where he did not allow a run with two strikeouts.

The Roadrunners added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Smith started the inning with a single and then moved to second on his league leading 46th stolen base of the season. After moving to third on a ground ball, Smith came into score on an RBI sacrifice fly by Pino pushing the lead to 3-1.

Robert Roth allowed the bases loaded in the top of the ninth but got Nelson Teilon to ground out for his third save of the season and giving Edinburg the 3-1 victory.

The Roadrunners and Thunder will wrap up their four-game series Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Miguel Martinez (9-3) is expected to face Alexi Perez (3-4) with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
