Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-West Michigan's Michael Gerber drove in two runs and the Whitecaps took advantage of five Dayton errors to defeat the Dragons 5-3 on Thursday night. The game was the opener to a three-game series at Fifth Third Field.

Gerber, who moved into the league lead in batting at .363, singled and scored in the first inning, doubled to drive in a run in the third, and delivered a sacrifice fly in the fifth to pace the Whitecaps offense. He extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games.

The Dragons battled back after falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, getting a run-scoring single from Brian O'Grady in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1. Then in the third, trailing 3-1, Dayton's Jonathan Reynoso blasted a home run to left field pull the Dragons to within a run. Wendell Soto followed with a walk, went to third on Ronald Bueno's single, and scored on Gavin LaValley's sacrifice fly to tie the game at 3-3.

But West Michigan regained the lead in the fifth, taking advantage of two Dragons errors in the inning as they scored twice. The Dragons sent the minimum 15 batters to the plate over the final innings and nearly seriously threatened to score.

Dragons starting pitcher Tyler Mahle (2-3) worked the first five innings and was charged with the loss. He allowed seven hits and five runs (two earned) with no walks and six strikeouts. All five Dragons errors came with Mahle in the game.

Dragons relievers Alejandro Chacin and Jake Ehret each tossed two shutout innings without allowing a hit. Chacin retired all six batters he faced, striking out four, in his best outing of the season.

The Dragons finished with eight hits. Reynoso, Bueno, and Soto each had two.

The Dragons (15-13) battle the Whitecaps (12-16) at Fifth Third Field on Friday at 7:05 p.m. in the second game of the three-game set. Wyatt Strahan (3-1, 2.45) will pitch for the Dragons against West Michigan's Trent Szkutnik (2-0, 3.63). The Dragons will wear their new orange jerseys for the first time on Friday.

Friday night's game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (MeTV). The game is also available on Time Warner Cable channels 23 and 372.

All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.
