Great Lakes Loons News Release
Eastlake, Ohio - The Loons committed five errors and allowed six unearned runs to the Lake County Captains, who sunk Great Lakes 10-6 on Thursday night at Classic Park.
Every infielder committed an error as the Captains rattled off three runs in three separate innings. The Loons hit the bottom in the fourth inning when Kelvin Ramos committed a fielding error and a throwing error on the same play. Two runs scored for Lake County in the process.
Despite the struggles in the field, the Loons produced at the plate and exorcised some demons against Lake County starter Dace Kime.
Kime decimated the Loons over seven innings on April 26 and allowed just two hits with no walks and 12 strikeouts. The Loons equaled that hit total in the second inning alone when Alex Verdugo tripled and subsequently scored on an RBI single from Jimmy Allen.
The Loons led 1-0 when the errors struck and spread like contagion. An error on Allen at third allowed Dorssys Paulino to reach, and he subsequently scored on a double by David Armendariz. The Lake County designated hitter triggered a string of three-straight hits for the Captains who jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second inning. Two of the runs counted as unearned.
Lake County extended its edge to 4-1 in the third and then sailed away from the Loons with a three-run fourth. The Loons erred thrice in the frame alone, including twice on a Greg Allen grounder to Ramos at second.
Ramos atoned for his two-run miscue with a two-run homer off Kime in the fifth, and an RBI single by Jacob Scavuzzo made the score 7-4 Lake County. However, the Captains answered right back with three more runs in the bottom half to pull away 10-4. An error on Faustino Oguisten rendered all three runs unearned in the inning.
Loons' starter Kevin Guzman (1-3) took the loss. The righty tossed 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Four of the runs were earned.
Kime (2-3) again earned the win. Both of his wins have come against the Loons this season. The righty out of Louisville allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings with no walks and five strikeouts.
With the loss, the Loons fall to 12-13. Great Lakes has not won consecutive games since April 18-19 at South Bend.
Lake County moves to 13-15 with the win and 3-1 against the Loons in 2015.
The Loons return to Dow Diamond on Monday, May 11 for a 7:05 p.m. showdown with the Dayton Dragons.
The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
