West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The smell of popcorn...Crash the River Rascal...could it be baseball season in the snow? Not quite. Kindergarten to third graders in elementary school classrooms all over West Michigan will have baseball on their minds as they participate in the Whitecaps Holiday Art Contest, which runs today through December 15. Crash will come out of hibernation to bring popcorn and a special story to the winning classroom.

The contest is simple to enter: K-3 classes are invited to create an original piece of artwork that incorporates the Whitecaps with the spirit of the holidays and either email or mail it to the Whitecaps by December 15. The artwork may be a painting, collage, mixed media, drawing, photograph, computer-generated or any other form of art.

The winner will be selected and notified on December 16. At that time, the Whitecaps staff will work with the winning class teacher to set up a time for Crash the River Rascal to bring popcorn to the whole class and, with the assistance of a Whitecaps staff member, read the Dr. Seuss book "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

Whitecaps Community Relations Coordinator Anna Petersen said this contest is simply a way to promote creativity and provide elementary students with a unique project challenge.

"We love seeing the creativity of the youth in the area, and we put together this contest to offer a project for classrooms in West Michigan," Petersen said. "We look forward to seeing all the great pieces of art that our area students create!"

Artwork may be submitted by mailing or delivering it to Fifth Third Ballpark 4500 West River Drive Comstock Park, MI 49321, care of "Art Contest." Teachers may take a digital photo or scan and email it to promotions@whitecapsbaseball.com, along with the school name, address, phone, and the teacher's name, email, grade and number of students (an entry form is available for download on the Whitecaps website at whitecapsbaseball.com). Entries must be received no later than Wednesday, December 15. Digital artwork will be displayed on the Whitecaps website.
