Richmond Kickers News Release

RICHMOND, VA - (Monday, June 21, 2010) - The Richmond Kickers will attempt to continue their progression in the prestigious U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 22nd against division foe, Real Maryland Monarchs. Richmond City Stadium will provide the setting for this highly anticipated tie, starting at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night is "White Out" at City Stadium. Regular admission prices will apply ($12/adults and $7/youth), but fans can purchase tickets for just $5.00 at the gate if they wear white to support the Kickers first-ever White Out.

Both clubs put in an overtime shift last week in the opening round. After suffering a one goal setback, Real Maryland was able to equalize in regular time. Another goal was added in the first half of overtime, which saw the USL-2 side through. The Kickers left it late, acquiring the sole goal of the contest in the 119th minute. A Matthew Delicâte strike at the death assured the home side wouldn't endure a penalty kick shootout.

The winner of this match will be granted the opportunity to tussle with Major League Soccer's D.C. United at George Mason Stadium. Possessing a (4-3-1) overall record against the four-time champions, the Kickers would certainly have to fancy their chances if they advance.

Richmond holds a (5-1-1) series lead over division counterpart, Real Maryland. The Kickers have snagged seven points from three meetings with the Monarchs during this season's campaign. The two clubs finish the regular season series on Saturday, August 14th in Richmond.

The 2010 season marks the 12th time the Richmond Kickers have qualified for the U.S. Open Cup over the past 17 seasons, posting an overall record of 17-10 during tournament play. The Kickers claimed the U.S. Open Cup title in 1995, which introduced the first year of the "Professional Era" and have made it through to the quarterfinal round four times. Richmond has defeated three Major League Soccer clubs in the process; the Colorado Rapids, D.C. United and LA Galaxy.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is recognized as U.S. Soccer's National Championship. A single-elimination format is used with the tournament open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. Along with financial compensation, the winner will have its name engraved on the historic Dewar Challenge Trophy; the oldest trophy competed for nationally in American team sports.

A full-service soccer club with over 6,000 players competing in youth, adult, amateur and professional programs, the Richmond Kickers pyramid structure serves as a model to soccer clubs across the country. For more information, visit RichmondKIckers.com.
