One down, how many more to go?
After a thrilling 4-2 comeback victory over National Premier League soccer squad the Brooklyn Italians, the Harrisburg City Islanders find themselves poised to further their US Open Cup championship run. On Tuesday, June 22, the Islanders will host the Long Island Rough Riders in the second-round US Open Cup match---the only game standing in the way of Harrisburg and their possible Major League Soccer match against the New York Red Bulls.
Will the Islanders notch a win?
Long Island is no stranger to the US Open Cup. In 1997 the Rough Riders made it all the way to the quarterfinals, battling the MetroStars---now the New York Red Bulls---before falling 1-0 in sudden-death overtime. In addition, the squad made it to the second-round of the Cup in 2003 and 2005, and the first-round in 2007. Although the Rough Riders dropped from the professional level of the USL into the Premier Development League (PDL), they continue to be a competitive force in US soccer and will seek to end the Islanders Open Cup run on City Island. Long Island reached the second-round by defeating the New York Pancyprian Freedoms 2-0 in their first-round match, with goals by Danny Kramer and Alex Grendi.
The Islanders look to bounce back from a lackluster 1-0 loss to USL-Second Division foe the Richmond Kickers from this past weekend, and focus on the match at hand. Also, Harrisburg looked a little shaky at the start of their match against USASA amateur Brooklyn Italians in the first-round of the Open Cup before an offensive surge, led by J.T. Noone and Geoff Bloes, kick-started a dramatic comeback that tied the game 2-2 before two 15-minute overtimes provided opportunity for the Islanders to go up 4-2.
This time, however, the Islanders look to take control from the start.
If they win, the New York Red Bulls are next. Harrisburg will host the MLS team from New York next Tuesday, June 29, in the third-round of the US Open Cup in what should be a highly-competitive day on City Island. But first, Long Island is on the radar and Harrisburg wants to be sure the Rough Riders don't spoil any championship hopes.
