
Battery Faces RailHawks in Second Round of U.S. Open Cup

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery (USL2) squares off against the Carolina RailHawks (USSF2) Tuesday night at Blackbaud Stadium in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup; kick off is set for 7:30 PM ($5 - $10, 971-4625 / charlestonbattery.com). The Battery defeated CASL Elite 4-2 in the first round, Carolina advanced with a 1-0 win versus the Charlotte Eagles.
The winner of Tuesday's match will travel to Chicago next week for a Tuesday night third round game against Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire.
Forwards Brandon Massie and Levi Coleman recorded a goal and an assist a piece as Charleston overpowered CASL in the first round of the tournament last Tuesday. Forward Tom Heinemann and midfielder Zach Prince also scored as the Battery defeated the USASA Region 3 champions.
Charleston (7-2-3, 24 points) enters the game in first place in USL-2 six points ahead of the Richmond Kickers although Richmond has played one fewer match. The Battery's last USL-2 game was a 4-1 win over Richmond on June 11. Charleston's next league fixture is on July 3 (@ Richmond Kickers).
The Carolina RailHawks (3-2-5, 14 points) enter the game in third position in the USSF D2's NASL conference; Carolina tied Crystal Palace Baltimore 1-1 in their last league match played on Saturday night in Cary, NC.
Carolina has a superb record against the Battery with seven wins versus Charleston's two. The Battery lost six straight games against the RailHawks in 2007 and 2008 but last year won the series between the teams with two wins to Carolina's one.
The Carolina roster includes former Charleston Battery defenders Matt Bobo and Caleb Norkus; the RailHawks are coached by Martin Rennie.
