Evansville Otters News Release
SAUGET, IL - The Evansville Otters (5-14) dropped the series opener tonight to the Gateway Grizzlies 11-2 at Grizzles Ballpark.
For the 10th time this year, the Otters scored first, but a middle-inning surge from the Grizzlies led to the Otters dropping their fifth straight.
After a quiet top of the first inning, life sprung into the Otters when David Mendham robbed Andrew Mortiz of a home run as the first batter in the frame with a leaping catch over the short porch in right field.
In the third, newly acquired Mason White launched a home run over the right field wall to make it 1-0. It was his second professional at-bat.
Gateway answered, matching the Otters with a run in the bottom of the frame. The Grizzlies put a crooked number on the scoreboard for the next four innings to follow. They plated two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, then three in the sixth and seventh to take an 11-1 lead.
Evansville plated its final run of the game on an Anthony Calarco solo home run in the top of the ninth.
The starter Parker Brahms (1-3) went four and two-third innings, surrendering five runs on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Later in the game, Grif Hughes came out of the bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings and did not allow a run in one and two-third frames.
This series between the Otters and Grizzlies will continue tomorrow. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. Coverage is available on the Otters Digital Network and FloBaseball.
The Evansville Otters are the 2006 and 2016 Frontier League champions.
