Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TENN. - The Knoxville Ice Bears and head coach Jeff Carr announced Wednesday Christian Whitcomb and Fabian Platzer have been signed for the 2019-2020 season.

Whitcomb, 23, played 9 SPHL games last season, 4 of which were played for Knoxville. In those 4 games, Whitcomb had 16 PIMs, most of which came from fighting on behalf of his new teammates.

Coach Carr said, "When we were playing short from injuries and call-ups, Whit did a great job filling in for us and definitely got our attention when he started picking fights with [opposing teams'] heavies. I look forward to seeing what kind of energy he brings into camp."

Platzer, 21, played for 34 games for Milano Rossoblu (Alps Hockey League) in the 2018-2019 season. His experience in the European leagues have developed him into a desirable defenseman.

"Fabi has played very well in the Alps and he's going to be working hard, in camp, to be a blue-liner for us, this year," Carr said of the young skater. "He can play forward, as well, which can only improve his chances of making our roster."

The two newest signees for Knoxville face stiff competition, headed into training camp; however, both have shown their ability to keep pace at the professional level and take on roles, as they are needed. Coach Carr expressed his eagerness to put them along side his seasoned returners to see if they have what it takes to make this strong Ice Bears lineup.

Knoxville's 2019 Training Camp will begin Sunday, October 6th, just under two weeks ahead of their season opener, at home, versus the Evansville Thunderbolts, on October 18th.
