BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads, along with B2 Networks, will Webcast tonight's Syringa Bank Kelly Cup Playoff series-deciding Game 5 live tonight at 8:05 MST from Las Vegas. To view the game, fans should go to www.idahosteelheads.com and click on the link provided. The cost is $6.00 and a broadband connection (DSL, Cable Modem, T1, etc.) is required to view this video webcast.
PACIFIC DIVISION SEMIFINALS SERIES (BEST-OF-FIVE SERIES) RECAP:
The Idaho Steelheads (3rd seed) have come back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the Las Vegas Wranglers (2nd seed) two-games-apiece. The series opened with two games in Las Vegas at the Orleans Arena; Game 1 (L4-2), and Game 2 (L3-2). Games 3 (W2-0) and 4 (W4-3 OT) were played on Steelheads home ice at the Bank of America Centre, with Game 5 going back to Las Vegas.
PLAYOFF FIRSTS: *Idaho clinched a berth in its first 2003-04 Kelly Cup Playoffs with its March 10th win (3-2) over Long Beach.
Several Idaho Steelheads played in their first professional playoff game on April 6th. Included on the list are: Forwards Zenon Konopka, Jan Kopecky, and Lance Galbraith, as well as defenseman Mick Mounsey. Goaltender Mike Betz played his professional game on April 6th in an emergency start between the pipes for Idaho. Goaltender Dan Ellis suited up for his first professional playoff game on April 10th, and recorded a shutout.
AFTER FOUR PLAYOFF GAMES:
In Net: Game 1...Rookie Mike Betz started Game 1 after learning that expected starter Dan Ellis (Utah AHL) would be ineligible to play any remaining games this season for the Utah Grizzlies (Idaho's AHL affiliate) if he had played in an ECHL playoff game. Idaho's second goaltender, Blair Allison, was unable to play due to an injury (lower extremity). Betz stopped 19 of 23 shots, while Las Vegas goaltender Marc Magliarditi stopped 38 of 40. Game 2...Blair Allison started the game for Idaho and recorded the loss stopping 26 of 29 shots, while Marc Magliarditi stopped 29 of 31. Game 3...Dan Ellis was perfect in net for Idaho in his first professional playoff game, stopping all 21 shots; meanwhile Las Vegas' Dany Sabourin recorded the loss stopping 34 of Idaho's 36 shots. Game 4...Dan Ellis tallied his second win in as many starts with 25 saves in 28 shots, while Idaho beat Marc Magliarditi for the first time this series (OT) getting 4 by him in 32 shots.
Offensive: Lance Galbraith recorded the only hat trick of the series in Idaho's 4-3 OT win on 04/13/04 at the Bank of America Centre. Galbraith has a total 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists) this series, while linemate Zenon Konopka has 4 (2 goals, 2 assists). Defenseman Darrell Hay and Forward Jan Kopecky each have each contributed 3 points (1 goal, 2 assists).
Special Teams: Idaho is 1-17 (16th) on the power play and 1-14 (T3th) on the penalty kill. Las Vegas is 1-14 (T14th) on the power play and 1-17 (2nd) on the penalty kill.
Game 1: 04/06/04 Idaho 2 @ Las Vegas 4
LAS VEGAS (Ticker) -- Greg Day had a goal and two assists to help the Las Vegas Wranglers top the Idaho Steelheads in the first game of the Pacific Division semifinals, 4-2. Day helped out on a shorthanded goal by Chris Kenady with 9:17 left in the second period, broke a 1-1 tie 8:34 later and assisted on a marker by Tom Nelson that gave Las Vegas a 3-1 lead 4:08 into the third. Cam Bristow added a goal with 1:40 remaining for the Wranglers, who held a 5-3-2 record against Idaho in the regular season. Marc Magliarditi finished with 38 saves for the win. Jan Kopecky had a power-play goal in the second period and Scott Burt cut the deficit for the Steelheads to 3-2 midway through the third. Mike Betz gave up all four goals on 23 shots for the loss.
Game 2: 04/09/04 Idaho 2 @ Las Vegas 3 Note: Idaho filed an official protest with the ECHL over a Las Vegas goal scored in Game 2. LAS VEGAS, Nevada (Ticker) -- Ryan Christie had a pair of goals and Chris Kenady collected the go-ahead score in the third period as the Las Vegas Wranglers edged the Idaho Steelheads, 3-2, to take a two games to none lead in their Pacific Division semifinal series. Christie, who missed the opening game of the series, scored with 2:15 left in the first period and tied the contest at 2-2 with 8:47 expired in the third. Kenady netted his second goal of the postseason on a power play 76 seconds later for Las Vegas, which will travel to Boise for the third game of the series on Saturday. Marc Magliarditi finished with 29 saves for his second win of the playoffs. Dylan Gyori opened the scoring 6:48 into the contest and Ben Keup tallied midway through the second for Idaho, which won four of its five home games against the Wranglers during the regular season. Blair Allison turned away 26 shots in defeat.
Game 3: 04/10/04 Las Vegas 0 @ Idaho 2 BOISE, Idaho (Ticker) -- Dan Ellis had 21 saves to help the Idaho Steelheads stave off elimination with a 2-0 victory over the Las Vegas Wranglers. Ellis, who had two shutouts in the regular season, turned away 16 shots through the first two periods. Zenon Konopka opened the scoring with 6:47 left in the first period and Darrell Hay tallied 3:34 later for Idaho, which will attempt to tie the series at two games apiece at home on April 13. Dany Sabourin finished with 34 saves for Las Vegas, which went 0-for-4 on the power play.
Game 4: 04/13/04 Las Vegas 3 @ Idaho 4 (OT) BOISE, Idaho (Ticker) -- Lance Galbraith completed his third hat trick of the season in overtime as the Idaho Steelheads avoided elimination with a 4-3 triumph over the Las Vegas Wranglers in the Pacific Division semifinals. Galbraith, who had one assist over the first three games of the series, netted the game-winner 21 seconds into the extra period. The 24-year-old winger opened the scoring with 6:18 left in the first period, assisted on a marker by Zenon Konopka with 3:45 remaining in the second and tallied with 8:03 left in the third, giving Idaho a 3-1 advantage. Ryan Christie cut the deficit for Las Vegas to a goal with 4:39 remaining and Justin Kelly registered the equalizer with 16 seconds left in regulation. Konopka finished with a goal and two assists for the Steelheads, who have won the last two contests to force a deciding fifth game at the Wranglers on April 14. Dan Ellis stopped 25 shots for the win. Christie and Chris Kenady both had a goal and an assist for Las Vegas, who have beaten Idaho at home in six of seven meetings this season, including the playoffs. Marc Magliarditi gave up all four goals on 32 shots for the loss.
