Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Traverse City Beach Bums dropped a 2-1 decision in the finale of a three game series to open the 2009 season at Kalamazoo on Sunday afternoon.

A pitcher's duel throughout, it took until the sixth inning for a run to finally come across as Jason Kiley and Bernard Robert battled each other on the mound for the Beach Bums and the Kings respectively.

Brendan Murphy homered over the wall in left-center with two outs in the sixth to give the Kings a 1-0 lead. Kiley finished the inning but was hit with the hard luck defeat. He was selected as the Beach Bums Player of the Game after throwing six innings in his debut and allowing just the one run while striking out three and scattering seven hits.

Bernard Robert kept the Beach Bums at bay. Robert retired 21 in a row after allowing a single to Patrick Perry in the second and did not allow another hit until Brian Lapin singled leading off the ninth.

The Kings made it 2-0 with a needed insurance run in the eighth against reliever Kevin Reese. Jeff Grose doubled to lead off the inning and scored on an RBI single by Joe Ramos.

In the ninth, the Beach Bums were able to chase Robert from the game and put the tying run in scoring position. With two outs James Guerrero walked. Guerrero was the last hitter Robert would face in his 8.2 inning outing. Tommy Mejia entered and allowed an infield hit to Mike Epping that scored Guerrero. John Alonso hit a comebacker that ricocheted off Mejia and was nearly an infield hit, but Alonso stumbled shy of the bag, pulling up with an injury and the contest was over.

The Beach Bums will open the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday night at Wuerfel Park against Southern Illinois in a 7:05pm contest. Tickets are available online, in person, or by calling 943-0100. RHP Steve Roberts will get the call for the Beach Bums in the home opener while Southern Illinois will counter with RHP Chris Wiman.
