Wheaties Open Trip With Win

December 2, 2007 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Swift Current, Sask. -- The Brandon Wheat Kings ran their winning streak to four games Saturday night with a 4-2 victory over the Swift Current Broncos to complete a Western Hockey League home and home series sweep.

With the win, the Wheat Kings vaulted past Swift Current and into sole posession of second place in the Eastern Division with an 18-9-0-1 record, good for 37 points. The victory also moved Brandon to within two points of the first place Regina Pats, who dropped a 4-3 Overtime Shootout decision to the Kootenay Ice on Saturday. The Ice are currently tied with Brandon for fourth place in the Eastern Conference, thanks to their current 10-0-1-0 streak.

The Wheat Kings got goals from four different players on Saturday night as they opened up a 3-game in four night road trip. After Matt Lowry and Daniel Bartek, who was playing his 100th career WHL game, staked Brandon to a 2-1 first period lead, the teams swapped goals in the second before the Wheat Kings added an insurance marker with just over two minutes remaining in the third period. Tyler Dittmer, with his team leading 21st goal of the season and rookie Brayden Schenn, the Wheat Kings' Tip Top Tailors Player of the Month for November, had Brandon's other goals while captain Daryl Boyle added a pair of assists. Joe Caligiuri turned aside 24 shots to improve his record to 15-8 on the season.

Levi Nelson had both goals in a losing cause for the Broncos, who outshot Brandon 26-25.

Saturday's game marked the return of 16-year old Brandon rookie Scott Glennie to the lineup. The former second round draft choice, who missed the previous six games with a mild concussion, has ten goals and 15 points in 22 games this season. Only Schenn (12) and Kelowna's Jamie Benn (11) have more goals than Glennie in the WHL rookie goal scoring race.

The Wheat Kings' road trip continues Sunday night in Medicine Hat against the defending champion Tigers. This will be the third meeting of the season between these two clubs (1-1-0) but the first of the year in Medicine Hat. Sunday's game will also mark the return of Neepawa product Matt Lowry to the sold out Arena. Acquired from the Tigers in September for a sixth round bantam draft choice, Lowry is enjoying a banner season having scored fourteen goals and 32 points in 28 games.

Lowry was a valuable member of the Tigers' 2007 Championship club.

Brandon closes out this 3-game road trip on Tuesday night in Regina, before returning home to host the Saskatoon Blades on Friday night. Tickets to Friday's game - Westoba Credit Union Kids Loonie Scramble Night - are on sale now at the Keystone box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
