Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba - The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings will be busy this week - both on and off the ice. Besides completing a home and home series with the red hot Medicine Hat Tigers on Wednesday night at the Keystone Centre, the Wheat Kings will play host to the Prince Albert Raiders on Friday night - in a game to be televised nationally on Rogers Sportsnet - before hitting the road for a grueling 5-game road trip to the Northwestern United States.
Off the ice, the Wheat Kings' 39th Annual Sportsman's Dinner is scheduled for this Saturday night in the Keystone Centre's UCT Pavillion. The Dinner, which is held annually to raise money for the hockey club's Scholarship Foundation, will feature comedian Derek Edwards, the "voice" of the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs, Dennis Beyak as well as TSN football analyst Glen Suitor and former Ottawa Senators' general manager Marshall Johnston.
Johnston and Suitor will arrive in Brandon on Friday and will perform the ceremonial opening face-off before the Wheat Kings - Raiders' contest. A former member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Suitor is a 3-time Canadian Football League all star. Johnston meanwhile has spent thirty seasons in the National Hockey League - as a player, coach, director of player personnel and general manager.
In conjunction with the dinner, the hockey club will host it's annual Celebrity Sports Auction. Among the items that will be up for grabs Saturday night include a Jordin Tootoo autographed Nashville Predators' jersey, an autographed Todd Bertuzzi Vancouver Canucks' vintage jersey, an autographed Dany Heatley jersey from the Atlanta Thrashers, a World Junior jersey signed by Wheat King netminder Josh Harding as well as a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey autographed by all star goalkeeper Ed Belfour.
Friday's game will also feature the 12th Annual Westoba Credit Union Kids Loonie Scramble during the second intermission. Eight lucky youngsters will go on the ice and have a chance to "scramble" their way to $500 in cold, hard loonies. Because Friday's game will be televised, the Wheat Kings are encouraging fans to come prepared to the game, by making lots of noise and displaying creative signs to the camera.
As for Wednesday, it's the second last Rain Check game of the 2003-04 regular season, which means fans can exchange any unused ticket at the box office for a free ticket to this game.
Brandon's 5-game U.S. road swing begins Tuesday, February 10th in Spokane against the Chiefs and will wrap up on Sunday, the 15th in Everett against the expansion Silvertips.
