Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
BRANDON M.B. - The Brandon Wheat Kings solid defensive play leads to a 3-2 win over the Portland Winterhawks Friday night. It was the first win for the Wheat Kings over the Winterhawks since October 2014.
The Wheat Kings did a solid job early in the game keeping the Winterhawks away from the net over the first 5 minutes of the game. Carson Bjarnason stood tall stopping all 11 shots he faced and the Wheat Kings got a goal from Nate Danielson scoring off a saucer feed from Jake Chiasson to make it 1-0 after one.
In the second frame the Wheat Kings would score a pair in the final 6 minutes of the period. Nate Danielson would create another odd man rush shorthanded finding Brett Hyland off another saucer pass to make it 2-0 Wheat Kings. Only 3 minutes later Danielson would find Quinn Mantei at the point who rifled a slap shot past Jan Spunar giving the Wheat Kings a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes. The goal would be Quin Mantei's first of the season.
The Winterhawks would push back in the third period with a pair of goals. First it was James Stefan finding Jack O'Brien on the right side to put the Portland Winterhawks on the board, then O'Brien would return the favour 4 minutes later finding Stefan at the top of the left circle on the powerplay cutting the Wheat Kings lead to one. The Winterhawks would continue to push the Wheat Kings but Carson Bjarnason stood tall stopping 34 of 36 shots leading to a Wheat Kings 3-2 victory.
