Last Game: The Wheat Kings picked up a big 6-2 win at home over the Regina Pats. The line of Brett Hyland, Nolan Ritchie & Calder Anderson combined for 9 points. The Wheat Kings also had success on the powerplay going 3 for 4. In their last two games the Wheat Kings out-scored the Regina Pats 10-2.
Jan 6th VS Portland: For the first time in 4 years the Brandon Wheat Kings welcome the Portland Winterhawks to Westoba Place. Last time these two clubs met was South of the border when the Winterhawks defeated the Wheat Kings 4-1 on October 14th, 2019. Only players currently playing for the Wheat Kings who played in that game were Nolan Ritchie & Jake Chiasson. Last time the Winterhawks were in Brandon was January 8th 2019. Only player from both teams that is still around today is Robbie Fromm-Delorme who leads the Winterhawks in scoring in 2022-23. The Wheat Kings have lost their last 5 games versus the Winterhawks with their last victory October 2014 when Jayce Hawryluk scored 4 goals in a 10-3 win inside Westoba Place.
Apprentice VS The Master: Wheat Kings GM/Head Coach Marty Murray & Winterhawks GM/Head Coach Mike Johnston go way back. Johnston coached Murray in two World Junior Championships back in 1994 and 1995 and even coached Murray in the NHL during his short stint with the Los Angeles Kings. Marty Murray's playing career ended in 2010, since then, he's Coached for 11 seasons in the NAHL, USHL & most recently the WHL. Mike Johnston is in his 40th year of coaching hockey. It started at the Collegiate Level before working with Team Canada from 1993 to 1999. After 2000, Johnston worked with the Vancouver Canucks, Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins. This is Johnston's 2nd stint with the Portland Winterhawks.
