Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB - With the 13th overall pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft on Wednesday, the Brandon Wheat Kings selected Quinn Mantei from Weyburn, Saskatchewan.

The 5'10, 155 lbs left shot defenceman spent the 2019-2020 season with his hometown Weyburn Red Wings Bantam AA, scoring 22 goals and 30 assists with 37 penalty minutes in 37 games.

Wheat Kings Assistant General Manager, Doug Gasper, likes what he sees from Mantei and thinks his well-rounded game will be valuable to the organization.

"A good defenceman, a mobile defenceman, an excellent hockey IQ and skill set and a guy who is going to go play with the Moose Jaw Warriors U18 AAA program, a very good program where players develop and we expect good things out of him".

Mantei skated with the Warriors for seven games this season in the SMHL.

"His sense, his skating ability, he's a complete package. I'm really excited to see where he is by Christmas time with even half of a year of U18 AAA under his belt, he'll really take off".

Mantei looks forward to the next step in his hockey career and playing close to home.

"I'm obviously super excited for myself and my family. Brandon is fairly close and I've heard nothing but great things about the club and the entire organization."

When asked what he thinks he can bring to the Wheat Kings, Mantei echoes many of the same sentiments Gasper sees in the 14 year old's game.

"I guess you could say that I'm an offensive defenceman. Like to quarterback the power play. I would say that two of my biggest strengths would be my hockey IQ and my skating. Think I'm a pretty strong skater who likes to move the puck."

"I definitely need to get stronger, bigger, faster. Like all players I can always improve at both ends of the rink. The WHL will certainly be a challenge but I'm excited and I believe that I'm ready to take that next step."

2nd Round, 35th overall -Trae Johnson, Martensville, Saskatchewan

Since the WHL Bantam Draft was introduced in 1990, the Wheat Kings have chosen 36 players in the opening round. In the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft, Brandon traded seven selections and the rights to Sean Comrie and finished the day with three first round selections: Nate Danielson, Tyson Zimmer and Rylan Roersma.
