Wheat Kings Reassign Two

September 10, 2007 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings pre-season roster has been trimmed to twenty-five players with Monday's news that two players have been reassigned to the Saskatchewan AAA Midget Hockey League.

17-year old left-winger Johnny Calkins will skate this season with the Moose Jaw AAA Midget Warriors while 16-year old netminder Graham Hildebrand will play for the Beardy's AAA Blackhawks.

Monday's announcement leaves the Wheat Kings with ten defencemen, 12 forwards and three goalkeepers including 17-year old Andrew Hayes, who remains sidelined with a broken finger. Brandon's netminding duties this past weekend were handled by 16-year old rookie Deven Dubyk and veteran Joe Caligiuri.

In other news, 20-year old defenceman Daryl Boyle left this morning to attend Boston's National Hockey League Training Camp. Boyle is one of three Wheat Kings currently attending NHL camps, joining Keith Aulie (Calgary) and Andrew Clark (St. Louis)

On the ice, the Wheat Kings ran their pre-season record to 2-0 Sunday night with a 4-2 victory over the Raiders in Prince Albert. Rookies Sanfred King and Matt Calvert scored two goals each for the winners, who defeated Swift Current 4-3 on Saturday night at Westman Place.
