Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings missed an opportunity to gain some ground on the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division leaders Saturday night.
The Wheat Kings, who downed the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2 on Friday night, dropped a 2-1 decision to first place Prince Albert on Saturday night and with the loss Brandon fell six points back of the Raiders.
The Raiders, who moved four points up on second place Winnipeg with the win, was playing its first game since Tuesday night and at times it showed.
After a scoreless opening period, Prince Albert jumped on the Wheat Kings in the second with back to back powerplay goals by Ilya Usau and Ozzy Wiesblatt.
Usau's powerplay tally two minutes into the second period snapped an impressive streak of sixteen consecutive penalty kills by the Wheat Kings, who entered the game as the third best penalty killing club in the WHL.
Trailing 2-0 through forty minutes, the Wheat Kings did push back in the third and after Braden Schneider cut into the lead with his seventh of the season at the four minute mark, they had a number of excellent chances to even the score but came up short.
With the loss, the Wheat Kings record slipped to 31-21-3-2, good for 67 points - two back of idle Winnipeg and to ahead of the fourth place Saskatoon Blades, who dumped Swift Current 8-1.
The Wheat Kings busy weekend will continue Sunday afternoon in Regina with a game against the Pats.
Not only will it be the club's third game in as many days, it will be the Wheat Kings first of five consecutive games on the road.
Following the weekend the Wheat Kings will travel to the Central Division where they will kick off a 3-game road trip Wednesday night in Swift Current.
Brandon's next home game - it's first in the month of March - will be Saturday, March 7th against the Raiders.
Tickets to all remaining home games go back on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
