Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - Western Manitoba hockey fans are encouraged to help celebrate Louis Riel Family Day Monday by coming out and cheering on the Brandon Wheat Kings at Westoba Place.

Winners of three straight games, the Wheat Kings are chasing Calgary and Red Deer for one of the final two Western Hockey League Eastern Conference playoff berths.

Entering Monday afternoon's game against the visiting Swift Current Broncos, the Wheat Kings trail the Hitmen and Rebels by six and four points respectively. Brandon is currently 26-22-3-4 on the season and 16-10-1-2 on home ice.

The Wheat Kings are coming off an impressive weekend home and home sweep of the league leading Prince Albert Raiders. Brandon followed up an overtime win on Friday by doubling up on the first place Raiders 6-3 on Saturday night in what was one of the best efforts by the Wheat Kings this season.

Monday marks the sixth and final meeting of the season between the Wheat Kings and Broncos, with Brandon holding a 3-1-0-1 series lead through the first five.

One of the reasons for the Wheat Kings recent surge has been the play of their captain.

Stelio Mattheos has moved into the top five in WHL scoring and enters Monday's game with 82 points, including 37 goals in 52 games.

His recent play has moved him past Brayden Schenn and into 26th place on the Wheat Kings all time scoring list. The Carolina Hurricanes prospect is currently four shy of Ryan Craig's career total of 268.

The Broncos meanwhile sit with a record of 10-40-2-2 entering the final month of regular season play.

On the road, Swift Current is 3-20-0-1, with one of those victories coming in Brandon during the first half of the regular season.

Ethan Regnier leads the club in scoring with eight goals and 27 points while Joona Kiviniemi's fourteen goals are the most of any Bronco this year.

Swift Current's biggest story of late - at least in games against the Wheat Kings - has been the play of 20-year old Rivers native Riley Lamb.

He's been outstanding in two games played against the Wheat Kings and is expected to get the call in goal for the visitors on Monday.

Monday's game is a presentation of TELUS, with fans receiving a special ticket voucher when they enter the arena. The card offer is worth a free commemorate Wheat Kings' duffle bag when presented at a local TELUS store.

In addition to also hosting a special Tech Challenge during the second intermission of Monday's game, fans will be encouraged to visit the TELUS green screen experience, to be set up next to BDO Fan Services inside the east main entrance to the arena, to get their own "free" Wheat King theme photo.

As well, fans are invited to bring their skates and helmets to the game on Monday, check them in at the MNP Hall before the game and then lace them up after the contest and join Willie - the Wheat Kings' mascot for a "free" public skate.

Tickets go back on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office, but fans can order anytime at www.keystonecentre.com.

Monday is the second of a 4-game home stand for the Wheat Kings, who host Calgary in a critical game on Wednesday and the Saskatoon Blades on Friday night.
