Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings completed a weekend home and home sweep of the league leading Prince Albert Raiders Saturday night with a 6-3 victory before close to 4,100 fans at Westoba Place.

With the win - Brandon's third in a row - the Wheat Kings pulled to within four points of the Red Deer Rebels and the second wild card spot in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference. The Calgary Hitmen meanwhile remain six points up on Brandon after beating the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-3.

Saturday marked the first time this season that the Raiders have lost back to back games and came one night after the Wheat Kings handed Prince Albert its first overtime loss of the 2018-19 campaign.

In a game that featured the Wheat Kings wearing special Don Cherry theme jerseys, in support of organ donations, the home team jumped out to a 3-1 first period lead on a couple of powerplay goals and increased its lead to 5-3 through forty minutes.

In the third, the Raiders came on strong, outshooting Brandon 20-5 and thanks to a goal by Justin Nachbaur at the 5:17 mark, cut the lead to two but that was as close as they would get as Brandon's Jiri Patera was equal to the challenge, making a number of big stops, before Ben McCartney iced the game into an empty net.

Captain Stelio Mattheos led the Wheat Kings with three goals and four points, with the singles coming off the sticks of Cole Reinhardt and Luka Burzan.

Nachbaur wound up with two goals in a losing cause, with Dante Hannoun rounding out the scoring for the Raiders, who slipped to 46-8-1-2 on the year.

By scoring six goals - fans in attendance will be able to take advantage of two ticket specials on Sunday. Online pizza orders at Dominos will be 50% off when using the Promo Code WK5 and fans will save 6 cents per litre on their gas fill-up at all Heritage Co-op locations.

Saturday's jersey auction meanwhile netted over $13,000 for the Canadian Kidney Foundation, thanks to ReMax. Fans attending the game were given the opportunity to bid before and during the first two periods of the game.

The Wheat Kings will be hoping to make it four straight wins on Monday afternoon when they play host to the visiting Swift Current Broncos at 2:30pm.

Tickets to the game will go back on sale Monday morning at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
