Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings have won four straight games.
Jiri Patera turned aside 40 shots and the Wheat Kings got goals from four different players as they defeated the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers 4-1 Tuesday night before over 3,200 fans at Westoba Place.
One day after being chosen the WHL's Goaltender of the Week and being one of three goaltenders to be invited to the Czech Republic National Junior Selection Camp, the Vegas Golden Knights' prospect turned aside 19 of 20 shots in the second period when the Tigers had a number of excellent chances.
It was in that second period, with the game tied at one, when captain Stelio Mattheos scored what proved to be the game winner with just over three minutes remaining.
In the third, Linden McCorrister scored that all important insurance goal at the six minute mark to give Brandon a 3-1 advantage and Ben McCartney sealed the deal when hit a 185 foot shot into the empty net.
Luka Burzan - in the opening period - rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who improved to 14-7-3-3 on the season.
Ryan Chyzowski scored in a losing cause for the Tigers, who received a 42-save performance from Mads Sogaard.
With the loss, the Tigers slipped one game below the .500 mark at 13-14-1-2.
Brandon coach David Anning on Tuesday's win.
"Both teams had a lot of zone time throughout 40 minutes," he told the Brandon Sun's Perry Bergson. "I thought they pressured the puck hard in our defensive zone and forced some turnovers, and we didn't get the puck moving as quickly as we would have liked. I thought offensively, we forced some mistakes and were able to play in the offensive zone."
"Getting back on track and winning again, there's no better feeling in the dressing room for sure," says Burzan, who was named the Wheat Kings' TELUS Player of the Month for November. "Obviously it gives us momentum going into next weekend against P.A. It's a good feeling, and we want to show up against P.A. this weekend."
The Wheat Kings will host the Raiders on Friday night in what will be the first of a weekend home and home series.
Tickets to Friday night's game - presented by Craftsmen - go back on sale Wednesday morning at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
