Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
PRINCE ALBERT S.K. - The Brandon Wheat Kings avoid a Prince Albert Raiders comeback and escape with a 4-3 win Wednesday night.
The Wheat Kings came out flying to start the game with Brett Hyland scoring off the rush after some solid neutral zone back checking from Jake Chiasson to take a 1-0 lead. The Wheat Kings would add another with Quinn Mantei noticing the Raiders changing feeding Calder Anderson on the left wing side scoring with a wrist shot on the left side circle beating Tikhon Chaika to take a 2-0 lead. Wheat Kings goaltender Carson Bjarnason made a handful of solid stops in the final 5 minutes of the first period to keep it 2-0 Wheat Kings heading into the 2nd period.
The second period started with a 4 on 3 powerplay for the Raiders which the Wheat Kings would survive. The Raiders would also have a handful of powerplay opportunities after including a two man advantage and the Wheat Kings would kill those off. The Raiders would finally get on the board when Eric Johnston fired a slap shot from the point with Niall Crocker redirecting the puck out of mid air beating Carson Bjarnason to cut the Wheat Kings lead in half making it 2-1.
With a one goal lead the Wheat Kings needed a strong third period. They got a powerplay goal from Nolan Ritchie to make it 3-1 which appeared to be the insurance goal for the Wheat Kings but the Raiders had other ideas. Gabe Ludwig & Harrison Lodewyk would each score for the Raiders to tie the game up at 3 with 5 minutes remaining in regulation. The Wheat Kings would restore the lead with Jake Chiasson scoring off a sharp angle to give the Wheat Kings a 4-3 lead and ultimately the victory.
