Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. -- The Brandon Wheat Kings were busy Tuesday participating in the 2010 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.

After trading up to acquire Kootenay's first round pick (43rd overall), Brandon general manager and head coach Kelly McCrimmon opted for 19-year old Danish forward Mark Mieritz.

In order to obtain the 5'11" 183 lb. Mieritz, the Wheat Kings gave up a sixth round pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.

The right-winger has spent the past two seasons in the Swedish Jr. League with Frolunda, scoring six goals and 20 points in 34 regular season games in 2009-10.

At the World Junior Championship Division I tournament this past winter, Mieritz had two goals and 7 points in leading Denmark to a Silver Medal.

The Wheat Kings moved up to get the 43rd pick when the Medicine Hat Tigers chose to use Brandon's first round pick. The Tigers had the option of taking the 59th overall pick or a sixth round selection in next year's bantam draft as a result of a previous deal between the two clubs.

This marks the second straight season that the Wheat Kings have made deals in order to move up in the Import Draft. Last year, Brandon made two trades in order to draft right-winger Toni Rajala and defenceman Alexander Urbom 14th and 23rd respectively.

While Urbom is expected to play professionally in the New Jersey Devils' organization this winter, Brandon has elected to retain Rajala's rights, meaning the WHL club was only permitted to make one selection on Tuesday.
