Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan -- 16-year old rookie Mark Stone scored three times and 18-year old netminder Andrew Hayes turned aside 27 shots Tuesday night as the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings blanked Moose Jaw 7-0 in Western Hockey League action at the Civic Centre.
With the win, the 38-15-3-1 Wheat Kings improved to 11-2-0 in their last thirteen games to keep pace with the front running Saskatoon Blades in the WHL's Eastern Division. The Blades shutout the Medicine Hat Tigers 3-0 Tuesday.
The shutout was Hayes' second in three starts and fifth of his WHL career, moving him past Joe Caligiuri and Jomar Cruz and into a tie with Brian Elder and Josh Harding for sixth place on the club's all time list.
Goals by Del Cowan, Jay Fehr and Stone gave Brandon a 3-0 first period lead. Stone, with his second and defenceman Chad Erb connected in the second period to give the Wheat Kings a 5-goal cushion through forty minutes. Stone and Brayden Schenn rounded out the scoring in the third. Schenn, who added three assists in the game, has now scored goals in five straight games. The 17-year old Saskatoon product has also regained the club scoring lead. In 55 games this season, he has 26 goals and 71 points, equalling last year's output.
The Wheat Kings returned to Brandon early this morning and will begin preparations for what should be their biggest game of the season's second half - on Friday night - when the Eastern Conference leading Calgary Hitmen pay a visit to Westman Place.
With a victory on Friday, Brandon will officially clinch a playoff spot for the sixteenth time in the past 17 years.
Tickets to Friday's game are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
