Wheat Kings Beat ICE 5-4 in OT Thriller

April 18, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Winnipeg Ice News Release

The Winnipeg ICE and the Brandon Wheat Kings meet for the fourth and final time this season in the Battle of Manitoba, as the ICE look to avenge Wednesday night's 5-3 loss. Winnipeg is coming off a 5-4 victory against Swift Current on Friday, while the Wheat Kings beat the Moose Jaw Warriors last night 4-1. Daniel Hauser gets his second straight start after making 40 saves against the Broncos on Friday, while Ethan Kruger gets the nod for Brandon for his second start in two nights.

The Wheat Kings got on the board first while Conor Geekie was in the box for a high sticking double-minor, as Nolan Ritchie ripped one far side on a screened Hauser. The goal came at 8:47 and was assisted by Braden Schneider and Ben McCartney. Marcus Sekundiak doubled Brandon's lead with a well placed backhand shot that went top corner over Hauser. Winnipeg would respond on the power-play three minutes later as Owen Pederson fed Jakin Smallwood who had an easy tap in past a sprawled out Kruger. Brandon led 13-6 in shots heading into the second period.

Pederson brought the ICE level four minutes into the second period as he redirected a Connor McClennon pass into the back of the net. Peyton Krebs received the second assist on the power-play goal. Brandon would retake the lead after Nathan Salame finished off a nice passing play between Ridley Greig and Ben McCartney. Winnipeg would get a power-play to finish the period and thought they had tied the game as Pederson cleaned up a rebound and buried the puck as the whistle sounded. After review it was determined however that time had expired before the puck crossed the line. Shots were 22-18 in favour of Brandon.

Winnipeg would tie the game at 8:16 in the third period as Salame's pass got intercepted by Krebs in Brandon's zone and the ICE captain found McClennon who one-timed it past Kruger. The ICE then took the lead as Krebs recorded his fourth point of the night, on a one-timer from Zloty that beat Kruger far side. With Kruger pulled, the Wheat Kings were able to tie it up as Greig was left all alone at the far post, as the puck found him and he found the back of the net. The ICE had a power-play opportunity in overtime but couldn't put it past Kruger. Schneider jumped out of the box to join McCartney on a 2-on-1 and the Wheat Kings captain fired it home to take the 5-4 overtime victory.

The ICE are right back at it tomorrow as they have a matchup with the Swift Current Broncos at 5:00pm CT.
