April 18 Preview: Wheat Kings vs Ice 5 PM

The Brandon Wheat Kings (14-3-2-0) take on the Winnipeg ICE (13-5-0-0) this afternoon at 5 PM in what will be their fourth and final meeting for the two teams this season. Brandon's coming off a 4-1 win over the Warriors while the ICE last played on the 16th when they beat the Swift Current Broncos 5-4.

McCartney stays hot

In his 200th career WHL game last night, Ben McCartney finished with a goal and two assists for 6 points in his last two games. The 19-year old forward has been an offensive juggernaut for the Wheat Kings this season contributing points in every game but two, and now leads the Wheat Kings in scoring with 12G-15A-27pts.

McCallum on net

Overager Lynden McCallum has been a leading goal scorer for the Wheat Kings, adding his 12th goal against the Warriors and putting him at 12G-3A-15PTS on the season. McCallum has a +/- of 6 so far this and has been a pesky source of offence for the Wheat Kings when it comes to loose pucks around the net. In 17 games, McCallum has averaged .88 points per game and has 2 game winners.

Previous Meetings this Season

Game 3 April 13 Wheat Kings 5 - 3 ICE

For the first time in the season the Wheat Kings opened the scoring, first off an early period rush by Riley Ginnell and then a goal from Brett Hyland to make it 2-0 halfway through the first. Connor Mclennon answered in the second period before Ben McCartney restored a 2 goal lead for the Wheat Kings and Conor Geekie scored for his third goal against the Wheat Kings this season before the second intermission. In the third, McCartney would add two more for his first WHL hat trick and Connor Ungar finished the game stopping 38 of 41 shots for a tired Wheat Kings lineup who had played three games in four days.

Game 2 March 25 - Wheat Kings 4 - 3 ICE

Conor Geekie opened the scoring by sneaking in behind the Brandon defence on an early 1st period breakaway. Nate Danielson scored his second of the season and Rylen Roersma got his first WHL goal and before the end of the first period, Jake Chiasson forechecked his way into making it 3-1 for Brandon. ICE leading scorer Peyton Krebs was the long scorer in the second period. Ridly Greig bagged a short handed breakaway goal that would stand as the game winner for the Wheat Kings.

Game 1 March 13 - Wheat Kings 4 - 2 ICE

The Wheat Kings got off to a good start but it was the ICE who opened the scoring, courtesy of a Conor Geekie breakaway in the first period. The Wheat Kings won 3-2 with second period goals from Braden Schneider, rookie forward Brett Hyland and a goal and assist by Jake Chiasson.

Leading Scorers

McCartney and Greig connected for Brandon's league-leading sixth short-handed goal on Saturday, the pair continue to play with some of the best offensive chemistry the Wheat Kings have to feature up front. Jake Chiasson currently holds a +/- of 13 and has already outpaced his 2019-20 season's scoring total of 15 points.Braden Schneider and Chad Nychuk are ranked fourth and fifth respectively in league scoring for defencemen.

Peyton Krebs rides a 17-game point streak into Sunday's match (9G-22A), four back of the ICE franchise record set by Mike Comrie set in 2000. Connor McClennon is currently riding an 11 game streak while Owen Pederson has scored a point in the ICE's last eight.
