What to Watch this Weekend Across the USL: Week 9
June 18, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release
Saturday will mark a special day for Republic FC when the Indomitable Club visits Oakland Roots SC for the first-ever time during USL Championship play.
Not only will this be the first meeting between the two Northern California neighbors in the East Bay, but the match is also the inaugural home opener for Roots SC since joining the league.
While Republic FC fans will either be glued to their televisions watching the fixture or making the trek to Oakland to watch in-person, there's no shortage of additional USL action to keep an eye on over the weekend.
Pacific Division Update
It's been over a week since Republic FC last took the pitch in a competitive match but that doesn't mean the other clubs in the division were out of action this past weekend as well.
Last Friday, a late Cal Jennings strike from the penalty spot ensured Las Vegas Lights FC and San Antonio FC would share the spoils following a 1-1 result.
The following day, a trio of Pacific Division matches took place as Orange County SC nabbed a 1-0 win at home over Oakland Roots SC, Tacoma Defiance was dealt a 3-0 loss at the hands of Phoenix Rising FC in Arizona and San Diego Loyal SC came back from a goal down at home to earn a 2-1 win over LA Galaxy II.
Three Pacific Division clubs were competing last night as Tacoma Defiance returned to the Pacific Northwest following a 4-2 loss to Colorado Springs Switchbacks while Las Vegas Lights FC were the victors in a seven-goal thriller after downing LA Galaxy II in Carson.
This coming weekend after SRFC plays Oakland, Lights FC welcome Orange County to the Sin City while Phoenix pays a visit to San Diego.
Tampa Bay Rowdies v Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
Heading into Wednesday's slate of fixtures, no team in the league had more points than Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Up until June 5, the Floridian club was unbeatable - earning all three points in its opening five fixtures. That was until Rowdies were handed a 1-0 loss at the hands of Independence in Charlotte. But Tampa Bay bounced back nicely last Friday with a 2-1 win at home over Loudoun United after fighting back from a goal down. Rowdies have only surrendered four goals all season - the fewest allowed in the Eastern Conference.
With Tuesday's win the USL ESPN Game of the Week, Pittsburgh has climbed up to third in the Eastern Conference Central Division. The 1-0 win over Indy Eleven on the road was the first win for the Steel City club in its last three matches. A win for Pittsburgh would see the side potentially leapfrog Charlotte and climb to within four points of Tampa Bay at the top of the table.
San Antonio FC v Rio Grande Valley FC Toros
It's a clash of clubs from the Lone Star State when division-leaders Rio Grande Valley FC Toros travel to San Antonio FC.
Both teams have already met twice this season with Toros taking the first match, 2-1 on May 16, before the two played to a 1-1 draw on May 29 in San Antonio.
RGV FC currently claim the top spot in the Western Conference Mountain Division having lost just once in its opening seven games before suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Austin Bold on Wednesday. Since the recent draw against SAFC, Toros has claimed back-to-back victories including a 4-2 win over The Miami FC in Florida before earning a 1-0 win over Real Monarchs in Utah.
Prior to Wednesday night's 2-0 loss to New Mexico United, San Antonio has played to three consecutive 1-1 draws after claiming a 2-1 win over Birmingham Legion at home on May 22. The club currently sits in fourth place, but a win would see San Antonio leap to within three points of first place RGVFC.
FC Tulsa v Louisville City
The Eastern Conference Central Division is certainly a competitive one and this weekend's encounter between FC Tulsa and Louisville City could see one side potentially rocket into second place behind Birmingham.
Louisville is fresh off back-to-back wins after a Wednesday night victory over Birmingham, 2-0, followed by a 3-0 downing of Memphis 901 at home with Wesley Charpie, Cameron Lancaster and Brian Ownby all finding the back of the net for the hosts. The recent wins couldn't have come at a better time as the victories snapped a two-game losing streak for LouCity.
Tulsa claimed three straight wins to start the season before dropping all three of its most recent matches before a Wednesday night win over Sporting Kansas City II, 4-3. On May 19, Tulsa was trounced 5-0 by Atlanta United 2 before being dealt a 4-1 loss on the road against Sporting Kansas City II. In the days that followed, Legion handed Tulsa a 2-1 loss in Birmingham but the midwestern club has finally returned home for Wednesday's fixture against Sporting Kansas City II that ended in a seven-goal thriller with Tulsa taking all three points.
